Washington, D.C.
Department of Government Historical Realignment
I don’t belong in here, but I’m where I want to be.
The smell of dust and old ink and paperwork assaults my nostrils as I walk the long, darkened aisles searching for the right box. Finally, there it is—brown, nondescript, save the filing information scrawled on the side in black Sharpie.
I feel my heartbeat start to rise. I take a deep breath and pull it from the shelf.
I open the lid.
I find the report I’ve been searching for. It was my father’s—back when he held my position, before Historical Realignment was officially sanctioned.
I start to read.
